Da Meanz of Production recalls the rebellious and uninhibited electronica from the turn of the century

Tulip Tiger, the electronic moniker of Augustus Watkins, has always defied conventions and avoided easy categorization. Until now. Back with his fifth full-length, Watkins has his sights set on the heavy breakbeats of 90's and early 00's electronica, inspired by classic big beat bands like The Prodigy and Chemical Brothers and genre-shaping soundtracks from films like The Matrix and Blade. With massive breaks, fat bass synth, and freewheeling samples, Da Meanz of Production hits like a backhand of déjà vu from 1998.

Muscular opener “Prophetic Word” gives way to the dreamy melodics of “Feeling Good Now Yes," before heralding the expansive, driving two-part “Keep On Moving." The back half of the album features the trip-hoppy “Lord Reform” which contains echoes of early Moby, and closes with the energetic “Robert Redford Macro-Nod," sounding like a lost track from The Crystal Method's Vegas.

Demonstrating a mastery in creative vocal sampling and delightfully topped with touches of acid bass and 909 house percussion, Da Meanz of Production is an outburst of drama cleverly wrapped in stylish continuous-mix format.

"Da Meanz of Production was conceived as a classic big beat album. I didn't intend to push the boundaries of the form of electronic music, but instead lovingly stayed focused on a particular aesthetic. I've rarely had an interest in "coloring in the lines" so this act of intentional restraint was a kind of rebellion against my own instincts. Every time I found myself wanting to explore an unknown dimension of sound, or even felt lost about what to do next, I referred to the millennium-era classics that shaped me. Though I'm deeply suspicious of nostalgia, the music from this time has inspired me, and even given me comfort during uncertain times, so making this album was also an act of self-soothing." - Tulip Tiger

"A hailstorm of deconstructed techno and extreme sound - framed in a distorted and ferocious dancefloor aesthetic. A transcendental journey through noise that is strangely meditative." -Musique Machine
