Power noise mastermind Dissociate trades sci-fi for horror
Minneapolis IDM and power noise mastermind Dissociate is releasing the album version of his score for Fractured Remembrances, the critically lauded psychological horror play written and directed by multi-hyphenate Duck Washington.
Reaching past his familiar arsenal for sci-fi soundscaping, Dissociate's Jonathan Ford designed numerous percussive and atmospheric sounds specifically for the scoring process, employing a Tim Kaiser-designed device using both metal chopsticks and a violin bow, baritone guitars equipped with EBows and a cache of synths and filters. The haunting, yet dazzling score utilizes unstable, detuned synth patches, underlining the protagonist's struggle between knowing what is dream and what is memory.
The Twin Cities Horror Fest-featured play follows lead character Aster, who disappears alongside her boyfriend for five days before being found alone. With no memory of what happened, Aster's world quickly turns to chaos as her fractured memory betrays her. To learn the truth, she must confront horrors beyond even her own imagination.
