Dissociate's Executive Dysfunction is here to alter your brain chemistry
Minneapolis-based Dissociate unveils compellingly diverse maxi-single.
A captivating journey through genre and mood, "Executive Dysfunction" begins lively but fitfully before gradually morphing into mischievous and danceable hard electronic fusion. Hints of trance seep through while choral vocals provide the first sign that the song is going to take you places you wouldn't expect from the artist. A hard 303 acid-line and modern drop make things official.
"Dauber," the single's B-side, is a study in both contrast and complement. The downtempo trip-hop track features an atypical time signature and the artist's distinctive guitar work. More reminiscent of Dissociate's latest score work (see Fractured Remembrances), "Dauber" pairs well with "Executive Dysfunction," as the two share similar overtones while exploring entirely different territory. Taken as a whole, Executive Dysfunction is a testament to Jonathan Ford's mastery of form, and continued pursuit of new electronic territories.
The three included remixes do away with genre trappings in favor of more heavy noise and experimentation. Korea-based Grave Generator contributes the "Eldritch Murmurings Mix" of "Dauber" which leans even more cinematic, highlighting that project's signature fusion of metal and synthesizers. Meanwhile, Dissociate contributes two alternate versions of "Executive Dysfunction," the driving "Mild Cognitive Impairment Mix" and the skittering "Intrusive Memory Mix."
Executive dysfunction refers to a cluster of cognitive difficulties that affect a person's ability to initiate and complete tasks — and while the single is an endeavor by the artist to put the condition into song format — the result is notably concise for the sonic distances it covers.

PLEZZURE - PLEZZURE
On their first official offering, East LA's PLEZZURE fuse electropunk and breaks like it's second nature. Their self-titled EP boils over with grimy, raw, scene-stealing energy.
