The last resort of a dying love: Death rock band Scorpion Tea share haunting new single

“They're Thriving Without Us,” the second single from Scorpion Tea’s upcoming self-titled album invokes an atmosphere of pain and isolation as it outlines the journey of a wandering soul who has lost everything. Dripping with moody synthesizers, sparse drums, and melancholy guitars, the song is ultimately carried by singer Anthony Diaz’s desolate and raw vocal performance.

A stark departure from the group’s debut single “Scarlet Misquote,” even the band themselves were pleasantly surprised. The tune was always an outlier as the band prepped material for their sessions at Studio 22 in Los Angeles with Tomas Dolas (Osees). Diaz states: “It wasn’t until just prior to our trip to LA to record the album that Edley told us that he had fallen in love with the orphaned demo track.”

This left the singer little time to draft lyrics and melody, but his results stunned the others. "At a complete loss as to how to proceed, I simply cued up the track and pressed record. What came forth was unexpected, and the song became, to me, the ‘lonely little petunia in an onion patch,’” continues Diaz.

As the band holed up in a hotel room after a particularly grueling day of travel, Diaz debuted his demo vocals to bassist Fern Puma, guitarist Christian Cruz, and drummer Edley ODowd, watching them all smile one by one as they heard the song for the first time. At that point, the band collectively knew they had something special.

“They’re Thriving Without Us” is once again accompanied by a cinematic remix from GIVE/TAKE labelmates DEATHDANCE, as well as a retro-inspired club remix from Toronto-based producer Employer.

Using the wilderness of western New Jersey as a backdrop, the video for “They’re Thriving Without Us” illustrates the story of a person walking away from everything, through an endless canopy of dead trees. Rife with psychedelic misdirection, Edley ODowd plays the role of the mask, carefully and slowly demonstrating emotional pain through his movements, while Diaz and Cruz follow suit with ghostly contortions.
